Recent research, published in the journal Technologies shows science is now hot on the heels of what Chinese medicine has known for millennia: physicians can use the tongue to assess a patients health.

The study shows that observed differences between features of the tongue can demonstrate correlation to certain diseases.

The RCHM is delighted to see that modern technology and AI now recognises the huge potential that Tongue Diagnosis brings to patient care, when in the hands of a skilled physician. However, we also want to reassure the public that while the article draws some correlations between tongue colours and certain diseases, in practice, there are multiple differences seen between patients presenting with any given condition.

Tongue Diagnosis is one of the pillars of Chinese Medicine’s robust diagnostic framework and has been used for thousands of years to assess the health of a patient. For the skilled practitioner, careful understanding of the information seen in the tongue is interpreted as a part of a complete diagnostic system.

It is carried out every day in the Chinese medicine clinic of RCHM members, and photographs taken can form a reliable part of a patient’s treatment record and can often confirm a rapid change in a patients physiology.
