Ancient tradition meets modern science in a landmark joint conference held in Manchester: experts in traditional acupuncture and herbal medicine share the latest research and developments in evidence-based integrative health care.
The leading UK professional bodies for traditional acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine meet this weekend for a conference at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School.
An historic event, this year is the first time the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM) have come together to hold a joint conference. The UK Conference of Chinese Medicine 2024 represents a global gathering of highly trained experts and practitioners in the field.
Specialists from the UK and EU will deliver presentations on fertility support, women’s health, integrative cancer care and dietary therapy.
This year also highlights a pioneering project within a primary care network in Gloucester, where BAcC Members have been providing acupuncture to patients on the NHS. These kinds of projects are made possible by the high regard in which the BAcC is held, and its accreditation by the Professional Standards Authority.
Similarly, the RCHM, established in 1987, is the UK’s only register of degree level trained Chinese medicine herbalists that has a dialogue with government bodies due to its rigorous standards of training, practice and herbal supply, critical for the safe and effective use of herbal medicine in the UK.
BAcC CEO Alex Jacobs explains why this year’s conference is unique:
‘The UK public deserves the right to have access to the safe and effective provision of acupuncture and herbal medicine, delivered from practitioners with high standards who they can trust. Chinese medicine may be an ancient tradition, but practised in a modern context, it is at the cutting-edge of treatment and has a strong evidence base.
This is the mission of the British Acupuncture Council and the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine. Our organisations set a standard which is respected, not only in the UK, but across Europe and the rest of the world. Our practitioners have minimum degree-level training and adhere to a rigorous code of conduct.
The theme of this year’s conference is the Chinese word ‘ yì’ which can be translated as ‘intention’ or ‘purpose’. This term reflects the joining together of these two leading bodies in the UK, with other experts and professionals from around the world, in the common purpose of supporting patients with this vitally important medicine.’
